Colin Aguiar was a child prodigy performing at two and writing music at ten. By 18 he had written two musicals and transitioned into writing film scores under Oscar Winning composer, Mychael Danna were he began his reputation as a director-centric composer. One of the earliest films he worked on was Ang Lee’s Cannes Palm d’Or winner, “The Ice Storm” and  Atom Egoyan’s “The Sweet Hereafter”, also a Cannes Palm d’Or Winner and Academy Award nominee. Other director-centric films include Jigar Talati’s “Fly” nominated in the Academy’s Student Category and Pixar’s “Sanjay’s Super Team” Oscar nominated in the Animated shorts category making a total of 4 Oscar nominated films alongside Ang’s “The Life of Pi” which won an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Original Score. Colin’s scores have also gone on to win over 18 Best Score Awards at film festivals in almost every continent around the globe.

Dear Paul, Braxton & Team,
Its just an honor to be considered for this project. I’ve always believed that the success of the director is the ultimate success of any film and so I developed a strategy to enable just that (detailed below). These are strategies I refined from Academy-level pictures to enable the success of the productions I work on. Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m always here to answer them!

I’ve been writing music since I was 10. At this point in the game, I think as a producer, not just a composer. My eventual question is aways, “how do we bring about the ultimate success of this film – specifically, in the scoring department?”

In order to do that, I usually analyze the film and come up with at least 5 completely different directions for our score. I almost never subscribe to just one ‘fast rule’ approach. These directions are always allegiant to the soul of the film but they address different strengths. One might adhere firmly to genre conventions, another might innovate the convention slightly, yet another might find a better way to reach your desired demographic. One might play on a highly metaphoric level and yet another might be totally experimental. They might come in different instrumentations – some orchestral, some synthesizer and some invented & ground-breaking. In the end, the director choses based on their level of risk and vision. By that point, we systematically eliminate everything our score is not and proceed knowing we’re on the strongest footing possible.

After working at the highest echelons, I designed this process to allow for an open-ended working structure that would allow me to draw on serious innovation and allow a director to impart a signature that is his alone.

If you have any questions, please, say hi. I’m always here to answer questions.

Colin Aguiar.
